Up_up_and_away - learningactivities

A tornado, like a hurricane, is a whirlwind. It is much smaller in diameter than a hurricane, and its movement is much more difficult to predict. This snakelike cloud is the most violent and freakish of all winds.

Most tornadoes form along a front between cold, dry air from the north and warm, moist air from the south. Thick, black clouds form, and thunderstorms develop. Suddenly a gust of warm, humid air rises with a swirling motion. Soon this updraft is spinning at a speed of 200 miles per hour (320 kph). (The winds of a tornado in Ohio were estimated near 380 miles of 600 kilometers, per hour.) Water vapor is pulled upwards. As it cools, it forms a twisting funnel cloud. This is the tornado that most people know .
